We’ve all heard that eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulemia, and other popular “starvation” diets, all have adverse effects on the internal organs. We’ve heard that they cause devastating damage to the digestive tract, kidney damage, and liver problems, but do we ever hear about the main two organs in our entire body?
Anorexia nervosa is claimed to be a psychological disorder in the minds of mostly young women striving desperately to be thin. This can cause great stress on the brain, but it doesn’t just stop mentally or emotionally, this deadly eating disorder can lead to actual brain tissue loss and damage.
The brain runs on a variety of energy sources in fat, and other macronutrients, but mainly, it’s favorite source of energy derives from plain old sugar. Glucose is the brains main source of energy. When the brain is lower on this energy source, it begins to slow, and rational thinking is tossed out of the window.
Also, the removal of food slows the energy between neurons in the brain, and brain tissue is lost. The effects of this can be catastrophic, and almost mimmic brain damage. An anorexic person can seem lethargic and slow, almost high. They often suffer from insomnia, yet are always exhausted.
The heart is another main organ the body just cannot live without. Sadly, when someone begins to starve themselves, the body then moves to “stored energy” in fat and protein. When a person becomes malnourished, the protein source that the body then pulls from is, you guessed it, muscle.
The heart is muscle. Although cardiac muscle is a lot different than the biceps in your arm, the protein is not much different, and when your body needs protein, it needs protein.
A person suffering from anorexia nervosa often loses muscle mass in their heart. It becomes weak, and beats irregularly. Usually, anorexia patients have very low (unhealthily low) blood pressure.
Once these two organs in the body fail, a person is clinically dead. This is why anorexia, bulemia, and other starvation disorders are all very, very dangerous and must be dealt with in a healthy, and swift manner.
